You probably don’t think much about your car’s suspension as you’re driving. It hangs out underneath the car and mostly does its job. That is until it doesn’t. Erik’s Automotive has some suggestions for you that might describe a problem with the suspension in your car.
The Car Is Sitting Funny
One type of suspension problem involves how the car rests. You might notice that one side or one corner of the car looks like it’s sitting lower than the others. That’s not an optical illusion. If you’re seeing something like this, it can mean that parts of the suspension are either broken or loose and that’s a problem.
You’re Experiencing Handling Problems
Because of how the suspension ties in with the steering system, you might also experience handling trouble when the suspension is having issues. The car might feel as if it’s pulling from one side to the other or the steering wheel might feel way too loose. Any time that the handling feels different, that’s because something has changed, so it needs to be checked out.
You’re Feeling a Lot More Bumps and Jolts
Part of the suspension’s job is to help you and your passengers to have a comfortable ride. It does that by absorbing the energy from the bumps and jolts in the road. Typically when you start to feel the car riding more roughly, there’s a problem in the shock absorbers. You shouldn’t be feeling a lot of the road, so if that changes and you suddenly are, it’s likely because there’s a problem somewhere in the suspension.
The Car Is More “Wobbly”
Another issue you might experience is that the car starts to feel loose and wobbly. When you or passengers get into the car, you might feel that a lot more readily than you used to. Or when people wiggle in the car, that might translate more easily and actually move the car more in response. That’s something that the suspension should be absorbing, if it’s working properly. Feeling weird “wobbly” sensations can mean that there’s something not quite right in the suspension.
